Mike Pence Drops Out of 2024 Presidential Race
Former Vice President Mike Pence ended his presidential bid on Saturday, calling on his party to return to conservative values and reject the "siren song of populism." Pence served President Donald J. Trump for four years, but he refused to comply with his demands that he block the results of the 2020 election.
Gasps were heard when he made the unexpected disclosure at the conclusion of his speech to a group of Jewish Republican contributors in Las Vegas. Standing ovations greeted Mr. Pence as he began his speech with a resounding endorsement of Israel's military actions in Gaza.
Then he changed direction and wrote a more "personal note," explaining that he had chosen to withdraw from the race after giving it careful thought.
He told the 1,500-person audience, "It's become clear to me that this is not my time," and vowed to "never leave the fight for conservative values."
As the most well-known candidate to withdraw from the race, Mr. Pence was the first to qualify for the primary debates based on requirements set by the Republican National Committee. He had not yet been declared eligible for the Miami debate on November 8th, when contenders must clear a polling criterion and have 70,000 distinct donors. A recent report from Mr. Pence's campaign revealed debt of over $600,000.
Trump exerted pressure on his vice president to disapprove of Biden's Electoral College triumph. That pressure campaign culminated on January 6, 2021, when a pro-Trump crowd attacked the Capitol, with some of them yelling "Hang Mike Pence!"
Mr. Pence is expected to be an important witness for federal prosecutors in the upcoming trial of Mr. Trump, set to begin in March. The charges are connected to Trump's attempts to retain power.
